Week 3
short update
-I'll be visting and observing the Chinese high school that I contacted starting this Thursday.
School System in China
Primary School
1st -6th grade
Secondary school
Middle School(7th -9th grade)
High School(10th -12th grade) –(Education Database)
the last semester of senior year is dedicated exclusively to preparation for the gaokao, the college entrance examination in China(Jacqui).
Classroom Structure
Each classroom holds approximately 50 students(Jacqui).
Students spend their entire school day in the same room(Jacqui).
There's no air conditioner in the school(Jacqui).
Classroom Participation
Teachers usually lecture at the front of the room(don't move around a lot)(Jacqui).
Students sit quietly on their seats to copy and memorize everything that their teacher teaches them(Lu).
Students rarely ask any questions or participate in the classroom(Jacqui).
“I was told on more than one occasion that students’ parents could actually be called into the school so that a teacher could complain that the child was disrupting lessons because he/she was asking too many questions.”
Lectures are often straight from the textbook.(Jacqui).
Classroom activity appeared to be the same every day(Jacqui).
Teacher-student relationships
Students are told to 100% obey their teachers(Lu)
In China, teaching is the most respected career.
Students need to nod or bow when (Lu)
saying hello to their teachers every time they meet on campus.
